Knotts Berry Farm - Perlious Plunge TO CLOSE!
Knott’s Berry Farm has revealed that it will close its Perilous Plunge water ride on September 3, 2012, sparking rumors that a new attraction will replace it.
The park confirmed the closure date via its official Facebook page, promising that “future plans for the site will be released soon”. The nature of Perilous Plunge’s replacement is unknown at present, although there have been consistent rumors that an enormous new roller coaster designed by Bolliger & Mabillard will be installed at the park.
Themed around the seaside funfairs of years gone by, Perilous Plunge is a classic “shoot-the-chutes”-style ride. It sees guest being carried in large boats to the top of a 121-foot tower, before plummeting down a 115-foot, 75-degree drop into a splash zone below. Its height made it the tallest water ride in the world when it debuted in September 2000.
Perilous Plunge underwent significant changes after a fatal accident in 2001 which saw a rider killed after falling out of a boat during the descent. This resulted in new, smaller boats being installed, reducing the size of the splash at the bottom, but enabling essential updates to the safety restraint system.

Sea World - Behind the Scenes at Manta

This week we take you backstage in the maintenance and facilities roundhouse for the Manta roller coaster, courtesy of ThemeParkReview.com, who let us join one of their tours. Fans of Central Florida’s only flying coaster will love this backstage peek at what it takes to fix and maintain this great B&M coaster. It’s the first time SeaWorld has offered any kind of tour like this, so you’ll definitely want to catch a glimpse of some new theme park territory you’ve never seen before.

Six Flags Great America - X Flight Testing

Six Flags Great America has released a video of its highly-anticipated X-Flight roller coaster completing a test run, ahead of the ride’s opening day on May 5, 2012.

X-Flight will be the second B&M Wing Rider roller coaster to open in the United States, following the recent debut of Wild Eagle at Dollywood. It will see riders suspended on “wings” on either side of its trains, and will replace the former Iron Wolf coaster in the Country Fair area of Six Flags Great America.

X-Flight’s circuit will feature 5 inversions and a number of twists and drops, with riders hitting a top speed of 55 miles per hour. Included among its inversions will be a barrel roll and a zero-g roll, while a unique element will see the ride’s trains pass through a narrow vertical gap in a mock control tower. Fog effects and water jets will also be employed to add to the ride experience.

Dollywood - Wild Eagle POV

Dollywood has debuted its new ride for the 2012 season, Wild Eagle, which has become the first “winged” roller coaster to open in the US.

Wild Eagle is a Bolliger & Mabillard Wing Rider coaster, and opened alongside the rest of Dollywood on March 24. It sees guests seated on “wings” on either side of the ride’s trains, with the overall experience designed to recreate the sensation of soaring through the skies like a bald eagle.

To coincide with the ride’s opening day, Dollywood has released a point-of-view video showing a riders’-eye view of Wild Eagle’s circuit.

The Swarm - Thorpe Park
@THORPEPARK
I have been patiently waiting for this ride to open for just over a year now, and after my first ride I could not be more impressed with a roller coaster! Thorpe Park and Merlin have really pulled out all the stops to make not only a good ride but give an amazing atmosphere and bring in some incredible themed elements too.
Let’s start with the atmosphere, we all know that THE SWARM has a destruction/state of emergency type feel to it and this was emphasised extremely well with actors placed all around the park (but mainly the new Swarm area). Not only were the actors roaming the area but also the queue screaming, shouting, and giving everyone a great laugh while they waited. We had nurses with cut faces, people with tin foil in their hair and boards around their neck, plus some sneaky arm men who always saluted when you walked past. They even had a fake news crew wondering the park getting the latest news from guests! A touch that I think was appreciated by everyone visiting the park today!
The entire Swarm area is very impressive, and does not disappoint. There are so many great viewing points for people who aren’t too sure about riding, and there are even some games stands and a little sandwich outlet stand. During my visit they had a selection of live bands playing on a stage just near the entrance of THE SWARM, but I am not sure whether this will continue into next week.
When you first approach the area you cannot miss the first drop, which plummets under a destroyed plane wing, which from first sight looks like the best head chopper going, but when riding you are too busy screaming your face off to really notice the height. Around the corner and there are a selection of destroyed/crashed vehicles including a fire engine which conveniently sprays water at riders of THE SWARM, a smoking helicopter and a crashed news 16 reporters van.
My first downside on THE SWARM has to be the queue, it is your standard back and fourth, cattle pen which is calling for queue jumpers to break the park rules! Even though the actors made the small wait enjoyable, I am not sure that this is something which will occur regularly. The station is probably THE best themed station at any UK theme park, even beating out Alton Tower’s Thirteen. The blown up church structure has heavy attention to detail and gives a great feel to the ride before setting off up the chain hill.
The two big things that guests will notice when walking into the station are the size of the track, it is stupidly huge, and secondly the upside down Police inspection unit which also functions as the control room for the ride! Thorpe Park have implemented a “card” front row rider scheme which if I am honest I am not sure will work with queue jumpers but for the number of guests today it didn’t really matter!
Now for the ride, right? What everyone has been waiting for! Well 9 out of 10 Thorpe Park, what an incredible roller coaster. I experienced all three positions, front, middle and back, but the back has to be the best by a long shot! The first drop is a spectacle, from the front you slowly turn down towards the large decent, and from the back you rapidly spin through the air! Either way, both are different experiences which all keep guests happy!
The first drop is by far the best, but don’t forget the small heart-line roll towards the end which spins riders through the roof of the church in a crazy whirlwind! There are also some water elements throughout the ride which, if your lucky, get some riders wet. I have to admit that I don’t really get scared or nervous about rides anymore but a good coaster for me is one that is enjoyable, this ride kept me laughing the entire way around! On a final note, the seats could not be more comfortable if they tried, with a similar layout to AIR at Alton Towers, it gives guests the ability to sit comfortably but still feel free when riding through the air.
I wanted to share with everyone how amazing this new roller coaster is, and I am positive it will attract a large influx of guests for the park!

Check out these exclusive first look snaps taken by RSG from a recent press event at Thorpe Park! The whole area is looking great and the attention to detail on the theme is incredible! I am loving the control box/ambulance, great idea Merlin!

I am heading to the park on Sunday and will get some great videos and snaps for you all!

You Me At Six - The Swarm Soundtrack Thorpe Park
@THORPEPARK
Rock band You Me At Six are set to release an official theme song for Thorpe Park’s new roller coaster for the 2012 season, The Swarm.
Reports suggest that the band’s song will be named “The Swarm”, and is the result of a partnership between Thorpe Park and record label EMI Music. It will be available to download via Apple’s iTunes music store.
The Swarm will be the first Bolliger & Mabillard Wing Rider roller coaster to open in the UK, and will see riders seated on “wings” on either side of its trains. It will swoop across a post-apocalyptic landscape strewn with wreckage and debris, with the ride’s storyline being based around an invasion of Earth by a “swarm” of aliens.
The dark tone of the ride is seen by Thorpe Park as a good fit with You Me At Six’s musical style, and the band’s soundtrack is likely to feature heavily in the ride’s queue line.

Thorpe Park - The SWARM

@THORPEPARK

Thorpe Park has released the latest teaser video for its highly-anticipated The Swarm roller coaster, which shows the aliens at the centre of the ride’s plot arriving in London.

The Swarm’s storyline will be based around an invasion of Earth, with the ride’s trains representing the marauding “swarm”. Riders will be carried on the wings of The Swarm’s trains, with the teaser videos showing that the aliens will “abduct” them before taking them on a fly-through of a post-apocalyptic landscape.

The countdown has begun and it just 8 days until the official launch!!

Thorpe Park - The Swarm POV

@THORPEPARK

Thorpe Park has released a full “point-of-view” video taken on The Swarm roller coaster, which will make its public debut on March 15, 2012.

The video, embedded above, offers a sneak peek at the experience that awaits riders on The Swarm, however the video pre dates the installation of the heavily themed elements. The ride will become the first Bolliger & Mabillard Wing Rider coaster in the UK, with guests being seated on wings on either side of its trains.

Port Aventura - Shambhala Construction Video

Port Aventura has released a new video showing off progress on the construction of its new roller coaster for the 2012 season, Shambhala.

The ride will become the tallest roller coaster in Europe when it opens later in 2012, standing at some 249-feet-tall. Designed by Bolliger & Mabillard, it will also feature the longest drop of any coaster in the continent (255 feet), as well as being the fastest at 83 miles per hour.

Shambhala will be themed around an expedition to the Himalayas, with Port Aventura billing it as a chance to “live the same sensations experienced by the greatest adventurers”. It is set to feature extensive theming, including “dark tunnels and mountain lakes”.

The €25 million rollercoaster will feature five camelback hills, providing significant “airtime” for thrill-seekers. Sections of its circuit will intertwine with the existing Dragon Khan coaster, which it is set to supercede as Port Aventura’s biggest draw.
