The big news of this season at Alton Towers is not the success of Ice Age 4D or the flop of Nemesis: Sub terra, but the planning approval for SW7 and work has now officially started on the removal of the Blackhole tent.
Work is flying along on the demolition, with all the canvas already stripped from the front section of the tent and work already starting on the main dome. The work so far has revealed the original colour scheme of Yellow and Green on the underside of the tent, as well as exposing several old game machines from the old Blackhole arcade, which had been left in the tent. With construction walls now dominating this side of X Sector, Detonator Drop has now also moved to the area in front of Submission.
Alton Towers has launched a TV advertising campaign for its two new attractions for 2012, Nemesis Sub-Terra and Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs – The 4-D Experience.
Both new additions are due to open on March 24, 2012, at the start of Alton Towers’ 2012 season. The TV advert, embedded above, feature the In the Hall of The Mountain King tune that has accompanied many promotional campaigns for the park in the past, and a limited amount of teaser footage for the attractions.
Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs – The 4-D Experience will be aimed at a younger audience, and will be hosted in the Cloud Cuckoo Land Theatre. The film is based on updated footage from the third film in the Ice Age trilogy, and will be the centrepiece of a small new sub-land.
Alton Towers will host a special Ice Age weekend on March 2-3, 2012, as it gears up for the debut of its new Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs – The 4-D Experience attraction.
Guests staying at the Alton Towers Hotel and the Splash Landings Hotel will be able to meet characters from the Ice Age movies, including Sid and Scrat. They will also be able to the watch the movie trilogy in the Alton Towers Resort cinema, with a number of other themed activities also planned.
The opening date of Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs – The 4-D Experience will not take place until March 24, 2012. It will replace the outgoing Go!Go!Go! Show in the Cloud Cuckoo Land Theatre, and is based on updated footage from the third film in the trilogy. A fourth will be released in July.
The new 4D attraction will be the centrepiece of a new Ice Age-themed area, which will also host a shop selling branded merchandise.
Alton Towers struggled to open on Saturday 12 February 2012 due to “Ice Age” temperatures (do you see what I did there?), but the park managed to open a selection of attractions on the original bill set for Half Term. All visitors received a complimentary bounce back ticket to use until June 2012 and annual pass holders received 4 free fast pass tickets to use before June 2012.
Some notable changes can be found in the pictures above (thanks to TowersNerd), including construction for Ice Age 4D and Nemesis: Sub Terra, along with an overhaul of the main Towers Street store!
Alton Towers - Submission & Enterprise CLOSED for 2012 [CONFIRMED]
Alton Towers have released the following statement following a post on their official Facebook page. The statement confirms that both Submission and Enterprise will be SBNO (standing but not operating) in the 2012 season to make easy access for the construction of the 2013 rollercoaster.
“Alton Towers Resort has submitted plans for a world-first new attraction to open in time for the 2013 season.
The steel rollercoaster will be constructed in the X-Sector area of the Theme Park, replacing the Black Hole which was decommissioned in 2005. Whilst the footprint of the finished ride does not incorporate the existing attractions – Enterprise and Submission – the building and development process will be substantially simplified by closing these two rides during the 2012 season to allow ground works to commence out of the public area. Oblivion and the rest of X Sector, including the brand new Fried Chicken Company restaurant, will remain open as usual.
We do of course have two amazing new attractions for the 2012 season – Nemesis Sub:Terra in Forbidden Valley is a psychologically and physically thrilling experience, set in a dark, intense underground setting and based around the back-story of the original Nemesis attraction, which opened in 1994. Promising to be one of the Resort’s most terrifying attractions, Nemesis Sub:Terra takes guests down into the deepest, darkest location of the theme park for the experience of a lifetime. At the other end of the scale is Ice Age– the 4-D Experience in Cloud Cuckoo Land, which promises to be the coolest attraction of the year. Opening on 24th March it combines 3-D footage with an exhilarating array of synchronized physical effects!”
Alton Towers Resort announced today a new recruit - Jack Osbourne - who was employed to ensure that the theme park’s forthcoming attraction; due to open on 24th March 2012, is the most terrifying to date. Osbourne has been settling into his new role as ‘Director of Fear’ over the past week and is working alongside Alton Towers Resort’s Fear Experts to develop the concept for the attraction.
This is very exciting news for Towers fans with not only a heavy theme appearing around what seems like a very basic ride (great news) but also an official opening date! With their earlier announcement regarding a new ICE AGE themed land, the executives over at Alton Towers are really pulling out all the stops to make the 2012 season a great one! Cannot wait…
Twentieth Century Fox and Merlin Entertainments have announced Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs – The 4-D Experience, a 4D cinema experience with a 3D film and various physical effects. The film will be produced by SimEx-Iwerks and will use footage from the 3rd Ice Age film.
Alongside a 4D Cinema guests will be able to explore an Ice Age themed area, with character meet and greet opportunities in addition to a merchandise area. Also, two Ice Age themed suites will be found in the Splash Landings Hotel from next year.
This news comes a few days after Go!Go!Go! announced that this is their final week at the Alton Towers Resort, after they made their debut in March 2011, rumours suggest that the new Ice Age 4D Experience will replace the Cloud Cuckoo Land Theatre.
This attraction will be in addition to the already announced Nemesis - What Lies Beneath.
Speculation about Alton Towers 2012 attraction is high. There will be 2 new attractions for Alton Towers next year to compensate for the lack of any new attractions this year. The existing theatre in Cloud Cuckoo Land will be re-themed AGAIN to Ice Age (it is great to have a show which kids will know, but I am not sure you can class this as a new attraction) and a new indoor ride will be built in the Forbidden Valley area of the park.
The new attraction for the Forbidden Valley site is likely to be four indoor drop towers. The fact that they are indoors suggests that there could be heavy theme and narrative involved.
In addition, while I was in California Nemesis was announced as the coaster king with 41% of the votes!! This wasn’t too surprising!
